NOTE 1
Instructions are written both for dress, as pictured, and for a shaped top.
NOTE 2
Construction of the dress is as follows: lower openwork band is worked in a lengthwise strip for hem width. Cast-on and bound-off edges of band are sewn tog. Then stitches are picked up along one long edge with a circular needle and worked downwards to hem. Then stitches are picked up along other long edge with circular needle and dress is worked in rounds to armhole.
DRESS
Lower Openwork Band
With smaller straight needles cast on 8 sts. K1 row.
Next Row (WS): K1, p3, M1p, p3, k1.
Note: The M1p will be the stitch that is dropped to form a ladder st at the end of the strip. Work even in St st (with k1 selvage sts), until piece measures 37 (38, 39, 40, 411/2) long, slightly stretched. K1 row on RS, letting center st drop and ladder down to the beg. Bind off. Block piece lightly. Sew cast-on and bound-off edges tog.
Lower Hem
With longer circular needle, pick up and k 202 (208, 214, 220, 228) sts evenly along one long edge of openwork band. Place marker, join, and working in rnds, work in St st (k every rnd) for 21/2. Bind off.
Dress Body
Note: Change to shorter circular needle when sts are too few to fit on needle. With longer circular needle, pick up and k 202 (208, 214, 220, 228) sts along other long edge of band. Join and work in rnds.
Rnd 1: Place marker (beg of rnd), k50 (52, 53, 55, 57), place marker for side seam, K 101 (104, 107, 110, 114), place marker for side seam, k 51 (52, 54, 55, 57). Continue to work in rnds of St st until piece measures 13 from lower edge.
Beg Waist Shaping - Marker Placement Rnd
K until 25 (26, 28, 29, 31) sts before first side seam marker, place shaping marker 1; k until there are 25 (26, 28, 29, 31) sts after first side seam marker, place shaping marker 2; k until 25 (26, 28, 29, 31) sts before 2nd side seam marker, place shaping marker 3, k until 25 (26, 28, 29, 31) sts after 2nd side seam marker, place shaping marker 4.
Next (Dec) Rnd: K to 3 sts before shaping marker 1, k3tog; k to shaping marker 2, sl marker and SK2P; k to 3 sts before shaping marker 3, k3tog; k to shaping marker 4, sl marker and SK2P, k to end (8 sts decd). Rep dec rnd every 14th rnd 3 times more, then every 6th rnd 3 times - 146 (152, 158, 164, 172) sts. Work even for 6 rnds.
Next rnd: K to shaping marker 1, M1k, k to shaping marker 2, sl marker and M1k, k to shaping marker 3, M1k, k to shaping marker 4, sl marker and M1k (4 invisible incs).

Next Rnd: K around, working 1 k st in each yo (4 sts are incd around). Work even for 4 rnds. * Rep between *s (6 rnds) 7 times more - 182 (188, 194, 200, 208) sts. Work even until piece measures 281/2 from beg.
Separate for Back and Front
With larger straight needles, k to first side seam marker, then k next 91 (94, 97, 100, 104) sts and leave on circular needle for front, with straight needles, k 91 (94, 97, 100, 104) sts of back.
BACK
Shape Armholes: Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 4 rows, 2 sts at beg of next 4 rows, dec 1 st each side every other row 5 (6, 7, 7, 8) times - 61 (62, 63, 66, 68) sts. Work even until armhole measures 5 (5, 51/2, 51/2, 53/4).
Shape Neck: K8, join another ball of yarn and bind off center 45 (46, 47, 50, 52) sts, k to end. Continue to work 8 sts each side separately for strap for 1 more. Place sts on holders for adjustment later.
FRONT
Rejoin yarn and work as for back armholes - 61 (62, 63, 66, 68) sts. Work even until armhole measures 3 (3, 31/2, 31/2, 33/4). Then bind off for neck as on back and cont on 8 sts each side for straps for 3 more. Leave sts on holders.
FINISHING
Block dress to measurements. Pin shoulders tog and try on dress, adjusting straps to fit if necessary. Bind off sts tog (or weave tog) at shoulders. With crochet hook, work 1 sc in back lps only of each st on cast-on lower edge, around neck, straps and armhole edges.
Re-embroidery
Zigzag re-embroidery of ladder stitch is worked with yarn and a tapestry needle. Beg under the first 2 horizontal bars of the dropped sts starting at the left side, wrap yarn around 2 bars twice, *bring yarn up from underneath the top bar and the next bar on the right side and wrap twice around, bring yarn up from underneath the top bar and the next bar on the left side and wrap twice around, rep from * to end of ladder st. Fasten off and secure.
Top
With longer circular needle, cast on 202 (208, 214, 220, 228) sts. Then cont as for dress body until piece measures 3 from beg. Then work all shaping and complete as for dress (omitting re-embroidery).
