A slit-neck shell with an East Indian, crocheted embellishment is knit and trimmed in Cotton Twist.

 

Shown in size Small.

 

SIZE
Directions are for women’s size X-Small.  Changes for sizes Small, Medium, Large, X-Large and XX-Large are in parentheses.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Bust – 33(35-39-44-48-54)”.
Length –20(20-1/2-21-21-1/2-22-22-1/2)”.

 

MATERIALS
BERROCO COTTON TWIST (50 grs), 6(7-8-9-10-11) hanks #8336 Sea Anemone (MC) and 1 hank each #8342 Sweet Violet (A) and #8335 Sea Goddess Blue (B).
Straight knitting needles, sizes 6 and 8 0R SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE.
Crochet hook, size 4.00 mm (F).

 

GAUGE
19 sts = 4”;  26 rows = 4” in St st on size 8 needles.
TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

 

STITCH GLOSSARY
KSP
K1, then sl st back to LH needle, lift 2nd st on LH needle back over returned st and replace returned st on RH needle (1 st dec’d).

 

BACK
With smaller needles, cast on 77(83-91-103-113-127) sts.
Row 1 (RS):  K1, * p1, k1, rep from * across.
Row 2:  P1, * k1, p1, rep from * across.  Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 3/4” from beg, end on Row 2, increasing 1 st at end – 78(84-92-104-114-128) sts.  Change to larger needles and work even in St st until piece measures 2-3/4” from beg, end on WS.
Shape Waist:  Dec Row (RS):  K2, SSK, k to last 4 sts, k2 tog, k2.  Rep this dec every 1” 3 times more, then every 3/4” once.  Piece should measure 6-1/2” from beg.  Work even on 68(74-82-94-104-118) sts until piece measures 8” from beg, end on WS.
Inc Row (RS):  K2, M1k, k to last 2 sts, M1k, k2.  Rep this inc every 1” 4 times more.  Work even on 78(84-92-104-114-128) sts until piece measures 12-1/2” from beg, end on WS.
Shape Armholes: Next Row (RS):  K2, KSP, k to last 4 sts, sl 1, k1, psso, k2.  Rep this dec every RS row 13 times more.  Work even on 50(56-64-76-86-100) sts until armholes measure 7(7-1/2-8-8-1/2-9-9-1/2)”, end on WS.
Shape Shoulders:  Bind off 5(6-8-11-13-16) sts at beg of the next 2 rows, then 5(6-7-10-12-16) sts at beg of the next 2 rows.  Bind off remaining 30(32-34-34-36-36) sts for back neck.

 

FRONT
Work same as for back until armholes measure approximately 1-1/2(2-2-1/2-3-3-1/2-4)” and 68(70-76-84-92-102) sts remain.
Note:  Work decs at each side of neck slit and neck as sl 1, k1, psso, k2 on left side (before slit) and as k2, KSP on right side (after slit).
Neck Slit:  Next Row (RS):  K2, KSP, k28(29-32-36-40-45), join another hank of yarn and bind off center 4 sts, k to last 4 sts, sl 1, k1, psso, k2.  Working both sides at once, continue to work armhole decs and AT THE SAME TIME, dec 1 st each side of neck slit as in note every other RS row 3 times.  When all decs have been completed, work even on 20(23-27-33-38-45) sts each side until armholes measure 5(5-1/2-6-6-1/2-7-7-1/2)”, end on WS.
Shape Neck: Still working both sides at once, bind off 3(4-4-4-5-5) sts each side of neck slit once, then 3(3-4-4-4-4) sts once.  Dec 1 st at each neck edge as in note every RS row 4 times – 10(12-15-21-25-32) sts each side.  When armholes measure 7(7-1/2-8-8-1/2-9-9-1/2)”, shape shoulders same as for back.

 

FINISHING
Steam pieces lightly.  Sew shoulder and side seams.
Neck Edging:  With RS facing, using crochet hook and A, join yarn at center back neck edge, work in sc around entire neck and front slit edge, join with a sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2:  Join B, ch 1 and work in sc in each sc around, working 3 sc’s in each top corner of slit and decreasing 1 sc in each lower corner of slit.  Join with a sl st in 1st sc.  Fasten off.
Rnd 3:  With A, work from left to right in Reverse sc, working same as for Rnd 2.  Fasten off.  With RS facing, using crochet hook and B, pull up a loop from WS to RS of work at right shoulder seam below neck edging.  Insert hook in sweater and pull up another loop, pulling through loop on hook.  In this manner, work in slip st around entire neck and front slit edge at base of neck edging.  Join in first slip st and fasten off.
Armhole Edging:  With RS facing, using crochet hook and A, beg at side seam, work in sc around entire armhole edge.  Join with a sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2:  Join B, ch 1, then work 1 sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in first sc, fasten off.
Rnd 3:  With A, work from left to right in Reverse sc around entire armhole edge, join with a sl st in first sc, fasten off.
