FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Hat circumference 14(15 1/2-17).
Length 6(6 1/2-7).
Mitten length 5.
MATERIALS
BERROCO HUSH (50 grs), 2 balls #6310 Rockabye Blue (MC).
BERROCO SOFTWIST BULKY (100 grs), 1 hank #7450 Violet (CC).
Straight knitting needles, sizes 6 and 8 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE.
2 Double pointed knitting needles, size 6.
6 St markers.
1 St holder.
GAUGE
16 sts = 4; 20 rows = 4 in St st with MC on size 8 needles.
TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.
CAP
With smaller straight needles, using CC, cast on 74(80-86) sts. Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 1. Change to larger needles and MC. Knit the next row, dec 18 sts evenly spaced across 56(62-68) sts. Beg with a p row, work even in St st until piece measures 5(5 1/2-6) from beg, end on RS.
Next Row (WS): P10(11-12), * place marker, p9(10-11), rep from * across, end place marker, p1.
Shape Top: Dec Row (RS): K1, * sl marker, SSK, k to next marker, rep from * across, end sl marker, SSK, k to end 50(56-62) sts. Continue in this manner to dec 6 sts every other RS row 7(8-9) times more, end on WS 8 sts. Cut yarn leaving an end for sewing. Draw end through all sts on needle and pull up tightly. Fasten off. Sew back seam.
Ears (Make 2): With smaller straight needles, using CC, cast on 11 sts. Work even in St st for 6 rows, end on WS.
Shape Top: Dec Row (RS): K1, k2 tog, k to last 3 sts, SSK, k1 9 sts. Rep this dec every RS row twice more, end on WS 5 sts.
Inc Row (RS): K2, M1k, k1, M1k, k2 7 sts. In this manner, inc 1 st each side every RS row twice more, end on WS 11 sts. Work 6 rows in St st. Bind off all sts. Fold ears in half and sew side seams. Sew one ear to each side of hat as in photo.
Tail: With double pointed knitting needles and CC, cast on 5 sts and work as follows:
Next Row (RS): * K5, do not turn work. Slide sts to beg of needle to work next row from RS. Rep from * until cord measures 6. Fasten off. Weave in end. Tie a knot in finished end of cord. Sew the other end to center back of hat 2 1/2 up from lower edge.
RIGHT MITTEN
With smaller straight needles, using CC, cast on 30 sts. Work even in k1, p1 ribbing for 1. Change to larger needles and MC. Knit the next row, dec 10 sts evenly spaced across 20 sts. Beg with a p row, work even in St st for 5 rows more, end on WS.
Thumb Opening: Next Row (RS): K 5 sts and sl these sts onto holder, k to end 15 sts.
Following Row: P15, cast on 5 sts 20 sts. Work 12 rows in St st.
Shape Top: Dec Row 1 (RS): (K1, SSK, k4, k2 tog, k1) twice 16 sts. Purl 1 row.
Dec Row 2: (K1, SSK, k2, k2 tog, k1) twice 12 sts. Purl 1 row.
Dec Row 3: (K1, SSK, k2 tog, k1) twice 8 sts. Purl 1 row.
Dec Row 4: * K2 tog, rep from * across 4 sts. Cut yarn leaving an end for sewing. Draw end through sts on needle and pull up tightly. Fasten off.
Thumb: With RS facing, using larger needles and CC, k5 sts from holder, pick up and k2 sts in corner of thumb opening, then 5 sts along cast-on edge of thumb opening 12 sts. Beg with a p row, work even in St st for 1, end on WS.
Shape Top: Dec Row 1 (RS): (K1, k2 tog) 4 times 8 sts.
Dec Row 2: * P2 tog, rep from * across 4 sts. Cut yarn leaving an end for sewing. Draw end through all sts on needle and pull up tightly. Fasten off. Sew side seam of thumb and side seam mitten.
LEFT MITTEN
Work to correspond to right mitten, reversing placement of thumb.
