PATTERN STITCH
Rnd 1: * K10, p1, rep from * around. Rep this rnd for Pat St.
BODY
With larger circular needle, using A, cast on 110(121-132) sts. Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up. This will be center front of costume. Work even in Pat St until piece measures 9(10-11)” from beg.
Shape Armholes: Rnd 1: Still working in Pat St, work 21(23-25) sts, bind off next 13(15-17) sts for right armhole, work until there are 42(45-48) sts on RH end of needle, bind off next 13(15-17) sts for left armhole, work to end.
Rnd 2: Work in Pat St, cast on 13(15-17) sts over each group of sts bound-off on previous rnd – 110(121-132) sts. Work even until piece measures 14 1/2(16-17 1/2)” from beg.
Neck Slit: Next Rnd: Bind off 0(1-0) st, work to end and drop marker – 110(120-132) sts. From here discontinue working in the round and work back and forth, keeping sts on RS rows in pat as established. On wrong side rows, k the k sts and p the p sts as they face you. Work even until piece measures 16 1/2(18-19 1/2)” from beg, end on WS. Change to smaller circular needle and C.
Hood: Dec Row (RS): * K2 tog, rep from * across – 55(60-66) sts. Beg with a p row, work even in St st until hood measures 7 1/2(8-8 1/2)” from beg, end on WS. Bind off all sts.
FINISHING
Fold hood in half and sew bound-off sts tog. With RS facing, using crochet hook and C, work chain sts along each purl rib of body working from cast-on edge to hood (See photo).
Leaves (Make 7): With straight needles, using B, cast on 6 sts.
Row 1 (RS): K1, M1k, k to last st, M1k, k1 – 8 sts.
Row 2: Purl. Rep these 2 rows 7 times more, end on WS – 22 sts. Bind off 5 sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 12 sts.
Dec Row (RS): K1, SSK, k to last 3 sts, k2 tog, k1 – 10 sts.
Next Row: Purl. Rep these 2 rows 3 times more – 4 sts.
Following Row: SSK, k2 tog – 2 sts. Bind off both sts. Felt leaves in washing machine with very hot water and a little soap until they have the desired look. Remove leaves, shape and dry flat. With RS facing, using tapestry needle and C, embroider veins on each leaf.
Vine: Vine is completely freeform. Using crochet hook and B, chain 109(113-117), turn. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off. Starting and ending 2” in from neck slit, tack chain around side and back sections of neck, allowing section along front neck to hang loosely. Tie ends of chain tog. Join yarn where desired and make chains of varying lengths for tendrils. As you fasten off each tendril, leave a long end. Thread this end on tapestry needle and weave back through chain, pulling slightly to scrunch tendril. Fasten off. Sew leaves to tendrils or main chain, spacing as desired (See photo).
Hood Drawstring: With crochet hook, using 2 strands of C held tog, make a chain long enough to go around front edge of hood plus 24” for ties. Knot ends of chain and trim to form tassels. Weave drawstring in and out around front of hood 1” in from edge.
Lower Drawstring: With crochet hook, using A, make a chain long enough to fit around lower edge of costume plus 24” for ties. Fasten off. Knot ends of chain and trim to form tassels. Beg and end at center front, weave drawstring in and out around lower edge of costume 1/2” up from cast-on edge.
