Bottom:  With dpn’s, using A, cast on 56 sts.  Divide sts on 3 needles and join, being careful not to twist sts.  Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up.  Knit 1 rnd.

Dec Rnd 1:  * K6, k2 tog, rep from * around – 49 sts.  Knit 1 rnd.

Dec Rnd 2:  * K5, k2 tog, rep from * around – 42 sts.  Knit 1 rnd.  Continue to dec 7 sts every other rnd in this manner, having 1 less st between decs each time, until 7 sts remain.  Break off yarn leaving an 8” long end.  Thread end into tapestry needle and draw through all sts on needles.  Pull up tightly and secure.

Center Section:  With RS facing, using dpn’s and A, pick up and k56 sts around cast-on edge of bottom.  Divide sts on 3 needles and join.  Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up.  Join B.

Rnd 1:  * With B, k1, with A, p1, rep from * around.  Rep this rnd until piece measures 1 1/2” above cast-on edge of base.  Fasten off B and work from here with A.
