Emelia is a stockinette stitch hat, scarf and mittens in Hip-Hop and Softy.

SIZE

Hat:  Circumference – 20”

Height – 7”

Scarf:  Width – 4”

Length – 72”

Mittens:  Width – 4”

Length – 9”

 

MATERIALS

2 Hanks BERROCO HIP-HOP (100 grs), #7227 Justus for Scarf, 1 hank for Hat, 1 hank for Mittens

2 Balls BERROCO SOFTY (50 grs), #2928 Italian Earth for Scarf, 1 ball for Hat, 1 ball for Mittens

Note:  All 3 pieces can be made with 3 hanks Hip-Hop and 3 balls Softy.

Straight knitting needles, size 15 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

1 Set (4) double pointed knitting needles (dpn), size 13 for mittens

Tapestry needle for Hat and Mittens

2 St markers for Mittens

1 St holder for Mittens

 

GAUGE

8 sts = 4”; 12 rows = 4” in St st with Hip-Hop and Softy held tog on size 15 needles

11 sts = 4” in St st with Hip-Hop and Softy held tog on size 13 needles

TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE

 

SCARF

With straight needles, using 1 strand each of Hip-Hop and Softy held tog, cast on 8 sts.  Work even in St st for 72”.  Bind off.

 

HAT

With straight needles, using 1 strand each of Hip-Hop and Softy held tog, cast on 40 sts.  Work even in St st for 5 1/2”, end on WS.

Shape Top:  Dec Row 1 (RS):  * K6, k2 tog, rep from * across – 35 sts.  Purl 1 row.

Dec Row 2 (RS):  K1, * k1, k2 tog, rep from * across, end k1 – 24 sts.  Purl 1 row.

Dec Row 3 (RS):  K1, * k2 tog, rep from * across, end k1 – 13 sts.  Break off yarn, leaving an end for sewing.  Thread end into tapestry needle and draw through all sts on needle.  Pull up tightly and fasten securely, then sew back seam.

 

MITTENS (Make 2)

With dpn’s, using 1 strand each of Hip-Hop and Softy held tog, cast on 22 sts.  Divide onto 3 needles and join, being careful not to twist sts.  Mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up.  Work even in St st for 3”.

Next Rnd:  K10, place marker, k2, place marker, k to end.

Thumb Gusset:  Inc Rnd:  Work to 1st marker, sl marker, M1k, k2, M1k, sl marker, k to end – 24 sts.  Continue in this manner to inc 1 st after 1st marker and before 2nd marker every rnd until there are 8 sts between markers.

Hand:  Next Rnd:  K to 1st marker, drop marker, sl 8 sts to holder for thumb, cast on 1 st, drop 2nd marker, k to end – 21 sts.  Work even until piece measures 8” from cast-on edge.

Next Rnd:  K10, place marker, k2 tog, k to end – 20 sts.

Shape Top:  Dec Rnd 1:  SSK, k to marker, sl marker, k2 tog, k to end – 18 sts.  Rep this rnd 3 times more – 12 sts.  Divide sts evenly onto 2 needles and weave tog using Kitchener St.  Optional:  You may bind off all sts, fold top of mitten in half, then sew edges tog.

Thumb:  Sl 8 sts from holder to dpn, join yarn and pick up and k1 st in st cast on for hand – 9 sts.  Divide sts evenly onto dpn’s, mark for beg of rnd and carry marker up.  Work even in St st until thumb measures 3”.

Next Rnd:  K1, * k2 tog, rep from * around – 5 sts.  Break off yarn leaving an end.  Thread end into tapestry needle and draw through all sts on needles.  Pull up tightly and fasten securely.  Weave in end.
