Approximately 25” around x 7½” high

MATERIALS
2 Hanks BERROCO ULTRA ALPACA (100 grs), #6212 Gordoba Grape
Crochet hook, size 6.00 mm (J) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE
1 Yd. 1½” wide grosgrain ribbon
1 Large Bucket Hat Form from Hat Shapers
Sewing needle and matching thread

14 sc’s = 4”;  17 rnds = 4” in sc

NOTE

We recommend that you use the hat shaper mentioned so that your hat will look like the one in the photo.

HAT

With crochet hook, ch 5, join with a sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1:  Ch 1, work 8 sc’s in ring, join with a sl st in beg ch-1.

Rnd 2:  Ch 1, work 2 sc’s in each sc around, join with a sl st in beg ch-1 – 16 sc’s.

Rnd 3:  Ch 1, work 1 sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in beg ch-1.

Rnd 4:  Ch 1, * sc in next sc, 2 sc’s in next sc, rep from * around, join with a sl st in beg ch-1 – 24 sc’s.

Rnd 5:  Rep Rnd 3.

Rnd 6:  Ch 1, * sc in next 2 sc’s, 2 sc’s in next sc, rep from * around, join with a sl st in beg ch-1 – 32 sc’s.

Rnd 7:  Rep Rnd 3.  Continue in this manner to inc 8 sc’s on every other rnd, having 1 more sc between incs each time, 6 times more – 80 sc’s.  Mark end of this rnd.  Work even in sc until hat measures 5” above this marker.  Try hat on hat shaper – it should fit loosely.  Mark end of this rnd.

Brim:  Rnd 1:  Ch 1, * sc in each of the next 19 sc’s, 2 sc’s in next sc, rep from * 3 times more, join with a sl st in beg ch-1 – 84 sc’s.  Continue to inc in this manner EVERY rnd, (having 1 more sc between incs each rnd) 11 times more – 128 scs.  Work even in sc until brim measures approximately 5” from marker.  Fasten off.

FINISHING

Felt hat in washing machine using hot water and soap.  Check often so that hat doesn’t felt too much.  When hat is desired size, remove immediately from washer stretch to fit over the hat shaper.  Allow to air dry completely.  When hat is dry, remove from hat shaper.  Mark beg of brim evenly around hat, then cut from edge of hat up to top of brim and cut brim off with sharp scissors.  You should now have a hat and a curved strip of felted fabric to create a free form rose. Fold one end of felted strip over edge of hat to wrong side and sew in place.  Sew grosgrain ribbon around edge of hat on inside, covering end of felted strip.  Gather and twist and twirl the felted strip, sewing to hat as you go along to create a free form cabbage rose.  Yours will not look exactly like ours.  Try it on and look in the mirror as you arrange the flower shape to look attractive on your head.  Every piece will be a little different and completely original.
