Approximately 17” wide x 8” high (in center of bag) after felting (Not including strap).

Straight knitting needles, size 17 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

2 Double pointed knitting needles, size 13 (dpn).

GAUGE

8 sts = 4”;  12 rows = 4” in St st on size 17 needles.

TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

STRAP

With straight needles, cast on 12 sts.  Work even in St st for 10 feet, end on WS.  Bind off all sts.

BAG BACK

With RS facing, beg at cast-on edge of strap, pick up and k95 sts along side edge of strap, picking up sts in the beg of every other row.  Note:  Several feet of strap will remain after picked-up sts.

Next Row (WS):  * P19, place marker, rep from * 3 times more, p to end.  Work 2 rows even in St st, slipping markers, end on WS.

Dec Row (RS):  K2 tog, * k to 2 sts before marker, SSK, sl marker, k2 tog, rep from * 3 times more, k to last 2 sts, SSK – 85 sts.  Rep this dec every other RS row 7 times more, end on RS – 15 sts.

Row 1:  * K2, do not turn work.  Slide sts to beg of needle to work next row from RS.  Rep from * until cord measures 18”.  Fasten off.

BAG FRONT

With RS facing, pick up and k95 sts along the other side of strap opposite sts picked up for bag back, picking up 1 st in the end of every other row.  Complete same as for bag back.

FINISHING

Sew bound-off edge of strap to cast-on edge.

Fringe:  Cut one 12” long strand of yarn and fold in half.  With RS facing, using crochet hook, draw center of strand through 1st row of strap along picked-up edge of bag back forming a loop.  Pull ends of fringe through this loop.  In this manner, make fringe in every other row on both sides of strap along picked-up edges of bag back and front.

Note:  For speedier cutting, wrap yarn multiple times around a piece of cardboard that is the desired finished length of fringe.

Felting:  Wash for 20 minutes in washing machine set on heavy duty cycle using hot water and soap.  Rinse well with cold water.  Remove from washer and shape as desired, then allow to dry.  If bag has not felted enough, repeat process.  Bag may be steamed into shape after felting for a more finished look if necessary.
