Kap is a newsboy’s cap knit in Keltic.

SIZE

Circumference- 20”

Height – 7” (Not including brim)

 

MATERIALS

2 Balls BERROCO KELTIC (50 grs), #5857 Glen Fiddich

Straight knitting needles, size 10 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

Tapestry needle

 

GAUGE

16 sts = 4”;  20 rows = 4” in Reverse St st on size 10 needles

TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE

 

HAT

With straight needles, cast on 80 sts.

Row 1 (RS):  P1, (k1, p12) 6 times, p1.

Row 2:  K1, (k12,p1) 6 times, k1. Rep these 2 rows until piece measures 5 1/2” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Top:  Dec Row 1 (RS):  P1, (k1, p2 tog, p8, p2 tog) 6 times, p1 – 68 sts.

Next Row and all WS rows:  K the k sts and p the p sts as they face you.

Dec Row 2 (RS):  P1, (k1, p2 tog, p6, p2 tog) 6 times, p1 – 56 sts.

Dec Row 3 (RS):  P1, (k1, p2 tog, p4, p2 tog) 6 times, p1 – 44 sts.

Dec Row 4 (RS):  P1, (k1, p2 tog, p2, p2 tog) 6 times, p1 – 32 sts.

Dec Row 5 (RS):  P1, (k1, p2 tog, p2 tog) 6 times, p1 – 20 sts.

Dec Row 6 (RS):  P1, (k1, p2 tog) 6 times, p1 – 14 sts.  Break off yarn leaving an end.  Thread end into tapestry needle and draw through all sts on needle.  Pull up tightly and secure, then sew back seam.

Brim:  With straight needles, cast on 3 sts.

Inc Row 1 (RS):  K1, (M1p, k1) twice – 5 sts.

Next Row:  (P1, k1) twice, p1.

Inc Row 2 (RS):  K1, p1, M1p, k1, M1p, p1, k1 – 7 sts.

Next Row:  (P1, k2) twice, p1.  Continue in this manner to inc 1 st before and after center knit st every RS row, working incs in purl, 4 times more, end on WS – 15 sts.  Work even in pat as established until piece measures 5” from beg, end on WS.

Dec Row (RS):  K1, p4, p2 tog, k1, p2 tog, p4, k1 – 13 sts.  Continue in this manner to dec 1 st before and after center knit st every RS row 5 times more, end on WS – 3 sts.  Bind off.

 

FINISHING

Fold brim in half along center knit st.  Mark center of straight edge of brim.  Sew double thickness of straight edge of brim to cast-on edge of hat matching brim marker with center front knit st of hat.

Dec Row 6 (RS):  P1, (k1, p2 tog) 6 times, p1 – 14 sts.  Break off yarn leaving an end.  Thread end into tapestry needle and draw through all sts on needle.  Pull up tightly and secure, then sew back seam.

Brim:  With straight needles, cast on 3 sts.

Inc Row 1 (RS):  K1, (M1p, k1) twice – 5 sts.

Next Row:  (P1, k1) twice, p1.

Inc Row 2 (RS):  K1, p1, M1p, k1, M1p, p1, k1 – 7 sts.

Next Row:  (P1, k2) twice, p1.  Continue in this manner to inc 1 st before and after center knit st every RS row, working incs in purl, 4 times more, end on WS – 15 sts.  Work even in pat as established until piece measures 5” from beg, end on WS.

Dec Row (RS):  K1, p4, p2 tog, k1, p2 tog, p4, k1 – 13 sts.  Continue in this manner to dec 1 st before and after center knit st every RS row 5 times more, end on WS – 3 sts.  Bind off.

 

FINISHING
