FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Approximately 42 across x 38 3/4 long (not including fringe).
MATERIALS
BERROCO SUEDE (50 grs), 7 balls #3715
Tonto.
Straight knitting needles, size 10 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE.
29 length circular knitting needle, size 10.
Crochet hook, size 4.50 mm (G).
4 St holders.
GAUGE
15 sts = 4"; 32 rows = 4" in Garter St.
TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.
BACK
With straight needles, cast on 2 sts. Knit 1 row.
Inc Row: K in back and front of each st - 4 sts. Working in Garter
St,
continue to inc 1 st at each edge every 4th row 77 times more - 158 sts.
When there are to many sts to fit comfortably on straight needles, change
to circular needle. Note: If you wish to increase size of poncho, keep
increasing until piece is desired width and length.
Next Row: K64 and sl these sts onto a holder for shoulder, bind
off center 30 sts for neck, k64 and sl these sts onto a holder for second
shoulder.
FRONT
Work same as for back.
FINISHING
Sl first group of 64 shoulder sts of Back from holder onto straight needle.
Repeat with corresponding 64 shoulder sts of Front. Join yarn to first
st on one needle. Holding needles facing the same way, one in front of
the other, insert point of circular needle into first st of each needle
knitwise, wrap yarn around circular needle and k these sts tog. * Knit
the next 2 sts tog in the same way. Sl first st on circular needle over
the second st to bind this st off. Repeat from * across row. Join second
shoulder in same way.
FRINGE
Cut two 10 long strands of yarn. Hold strands tog and fold in half.
With crochet hook, draw center of strands through first cast-on st at
point of poncho forming a lp. Pull ends of fringe through this lp. In
this manner, make fringe around entire edge of poncho working in the end
of every Garter St ridge and in each st at cast-on edges. Trim fringe
to even off if necessary.
Note: For speedier cutting, wrap yarn multiple times around a piece
of cardboard that is the desired finished length of the fringe. Cut the
lower edge to free wrapped strands.
