With straight needles, cast on 81(91-101-111) sts. Knit 6 rows. Work even in Lotus Pat until 2 reps have been completed (36 rows) and piece measures approximately 6” from beg, inc 15(13-19-17) sts evenly spaced across last row, end on RS – 96(104-120-128) sts. Work even in Clove St until piece measures 10” from beg, end on WS.
Shape Armholes: Bind off 7(8-8-8) sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 82(92-104-116) sts. Note: To bind off over Clove St, do not work in pat st, just bind off each st and yo. To dec over Clove St, if there are not enough sts to work an entire repeat (k1, yo, k1, p3 tog or p3 tog, k1, yo, k1), work these sts in St st. Dec 1 st at each armhole edge every RS row 5(8-10-8) times – 72(72-84-96) sts. Work even until armholes measure 7 1/2(7 1/2 -8-8 1/2)”, end on WS. Bind off all sts for shoulders and back neck.
FRONT
Work same as for back until 2 reps of Lotus Pat have been completed and piece measures 6” from beg. Inc 15(13-19-17) sts evenly spaced across last row, end on RS – 96(104-120-128) sts.
Front Slit: Next Row (WS): Work Row 1 of Clove St over first 48(52-60-64) sts, join another hank of yarn and work Row 1 of Clove St over last 48(52-60-64) sts. Working both sides at once, work even in Clove St until piece measures 10” from beg, end on WS.
Shape Armholes and Neck: Bind off 7(8-8-8) sts at beg of the next 2 rows and AT THE SAME TIME, bind off 4 sts at each edge of slit – 37(40-48-52) sts each side. Dec 1 st at each armhole edge every RS row 5(8-10-8) times same as for back and AT THE SAME TIME, bind off 3 sts at each neck edge 4 times, then dec 1 st at each neck edge every RS row 12 times – 8(8-14-20) sts each side. Work even until armholes measure 7 1/2(7 1/2-8-8 1/2)”, end on WS. Bind off all sts each side for shoulders.
SLEEVES
With straight needles, cast on 48 sts. Work even in Clove St for 1”, end on WS. Inc 1 st each side of next row, every 1/2” 0(0-0-3) times, every 1” 2(2-14-14) times, then every 1 1/2” 9(9-1-0) times, working incs into Clove St as sts become available – 72(72-80-84) sts. Work even until sleeve measures 17½” from beg, end on WS.
Shape Cap: Bind off 7(8-8-8) sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 58(56-64-68) sts Dec 1 st each side every RS row 13 times, then every other RS row once, end on WS – 30(28-26-40) sts. Bind off 5(4-5-4) sts at beg of the next 2 rows. Bind off remaining 20(20-26-32) sts.
FINISHING
Steam pieces with hot steam iron and a pressing cloth. Sew shoulder seams. Sew in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams.
Neck Edging: With RS facing, using crochet hook, beg at top right edge of slit, work in sc along entire neck edge to left top edge of slit. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc + ch 1), skip 1 sc, * work 1 dc in next sc, ch 1, skip next sc, rep from * across, end 1 dc in last sc. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each dc and ch-1 sp across. Fasten off.
Twisted Cord: Cut three 148” long strands of yarn. Put strands tog and fold in half. Tie ends in a knot. Holding the knot in your hand, slip the loop over a hook and pull tight. Slip a pencil through the knotted end and twist until cord is so tight that it can’t be twisted further and starts to double back on itself. Put 1 finger in center of cord and carefully fold in half, letting 2 ends of cord twist tog. Knot both ends leaving 1” free for tassels. Beg and end at front, weave cord in and out through Row 2 of Neck Edging.
