MATERIALS

2 Hanks BERROCO MEMOIRS (50 grs), #7704 Zola

Straight knitting needles, size 10 1/2 OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

2 St markers

2 St holders

Tapestry needle

GAUGE

14 sts = 4”;  18 rows = 4” in St st on size 10 1/2 needles

TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE

MITTENS (Make 2)

With straight needles, cast on 31 sts.  Work even in Reverse St st for 5”, end on WS.  Work even in St st for 1”, end on WS.

Thumb Gusset:  Next Row (RS):  K15, place marker, M1k, k1, M1k, place marker, k to end – 33 sts.  Purl 1 row.  Continue in this manner to inc 1 st after 1st marker and before 2nd marker 5 times more, end on WS – 43 sts.

Divide for Thumb:  Next Row (RS):  K15 and sl these sts onto holder, drop marker, k13, drop marker, sl remaining 15 sts onto another holder – 13 sts.  Beg with a p row, work even in St st until thumb measures 2 1/4” from beg, end on WS.

Dec Row (RS):  K1, (k2 tog) 6 times – 7 sts.  Break off yarn leaving an end for sewing.  Thread end into tapestry needle and draw through all sts on needle.  Pull up tightly and secure.  Sew side seam.

Hand:  With RS facing, sl 15 sts from first holder onto straight needles, pick up and k 1 st in side seam of thumb, k15 sts from second holder – 31 sts.  Beg with a p row, work even in St st until mitten measures 11 1/2” from beg, end on WS.

Shape Top:  Dec Row 1 (RS):  K3, * k2 tog, k2, rep from * across – 24 sts.  Purl 1 row.

Dec Row 2 (RS):  * K2 tog, k1, rep from * across – 16 sts.  Purl 1 row.

Dec Row 3 (RS):  * K2 tog, rep from * across – 8 sts.  Break off yarn leaving an end for sewing.  Thread end into tapestry needle and draw through all sts on needle. Pull up tightly and secure.  Sew side seam.  Fold Reverse St st cuff in half to WS and sew in place.
