Monty is a super simple mouse toy made from a square of plain knitting. Stuff it with catnip for a great cat toy or polyester fiber fill for a kid's stocking stuffer.

Warning: If Monty is made for your cat, we would suggest eliminating the yarn tail since it could potentially be ingested.

MOUSE

With straight needles, cast on 18 sts.  Work even in St st until piece is square, end on WS.  Bind off.

FINISHING

Fold mouse as shown on diagram and sew lower seam.  Fold up lower edge and sew one side, leaving the other side open for stuffing.  Stuff firmly, then sew open side.

Tail:  Cut 1 strand of contrasting yarn 3 1/2 times the length of desired length of tail.  Fold strand in half and tie ends tog.  Holding the knot in your hand, slip the loop over a hook and pull tight.  Slip a pencil through the knotted end and twist until cord is so tight that it can’t be twisted further and starts to double back on itself.  Put 1 finger in center of cord and carefully fold in half, letting 2 ends of cord twist tog.  Knot cut ends of tail tog and sew to mouse.

Ears (Make 2):  With crochet hook and contrasting yarn, join yarn at top of head.  Ch 3, then join to side of head with a sl st.  Turn and work 5 sc’s in chain.  Fasten off.  Using tapestry needle, work French Knots on face for eyes and nose.

Fold so that A and B are tog. Sew along dotted line. D is the mouse's nose. Fold C up to the end of dotted line and sew 1 side tog. After stuffing, sew 2nd side tog.
