SIZE

Approximately 10 1/2” wide x 8 1/2” tall (Not including handles and fringe).

MATERIALS

BERROCO MONET (50 grs), 4 balls #3368 Wild West (A).

BERROCO SUEDE (50 grs), 3 balls #3765 Tobacco (B) and #3717 Wild Bill Hickock (C).

Crochet hook, size 5.00 mm (H) OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE.

Ten  1/4” metal grommets.

One 10” zipper.

Two 1” diameter metal faceted beads.

One 10” long piece of heavy waxed cord.

Tapestry needle.

GAUGE

16 sts = 4” in sc with A using size 5.00 mm (H) crochet hook.

TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE.

BAG

Body:  With crochet hook, using A, ch 41.  Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across – 40 sc’s.  Turn.

Row 2:  Ch 1, sc in each sc across.  Turn.  Rep Row 2 until piece measures 16” from beg.  Fasten off.  

Edging:  With RS facing, using crochet hook and B, work 45 sc’s across one short edge of body.  Turn.  Work 1 more row sc, then (working from left to right), work 1 row Reverse sc.  Fasten off.  Repeat along the other short edge of body.  Fold body of bag in half so the 2 edgings are together at top, then sew side edges of bag tog.  Sew zipper to top opening between edgings.

Flap:  With RS facing, using crochet hook and B, work 1 sc around post of each sc of 2nd row of edging below one side of zipper – 45 sc’s.  Turn.

Rows 2 and 3:  Ch 2, work 1 hdc in each sc across – 45 hdc’s.  Turn.

Row 4:  Ch 2, * work 1 hdc and 1 sc in each hdc across – 90 sts.  Turn.

Row 5:  Ch 2, * work 1 hdc in next st, 1 sc in next st, rep from * across.  Turn.  Rep Row 5 until flap measures 9 1/2”.  Fasten off.

FINISHING

Using directions on package, install grommets evenly spaced across flap in a straight line 2 3/4” in from end.  Thread tapestry needle with 2 strands of C and work 1” overcast sts around 3 free edges of flap.  Cut two 12” long strands each of A, B and C.  Thread strands through grommets and pull up to gather flap, knotting strands tog at each end to hold in place.  Trim ends of strands, leaving 3” at each end for fringe.  Draw piece of waxed cord through grommets, slip a bead onto each end, then knot cord to hold beads in place.

Handle:  Cut eight 96” long strands each of A, B and C.  Cut four 24” long strands of C.  Secure the 96” long strands tog 7” in from one end by wrapping tightly with one 24” long strand of C.  Divide 96” long strands into 3 sections and braid together until 7” remains free at the other end.  Wrap braid tightly with second 24” long strand of C.  Wrap braid with the last two 24” long strands of C 3” in from the first set of wraps.  Pin one end of braid to each side of bag so that wrapped strand of C is 3 1/2” down from top of bag.  Sew ends of handle to bag leaving 7” long tassel at each end.  Trim tassels to even off if necessary.
