Dear Knitters and Crocheters,
I bet many of you are knitting gifts right now and most of these
gifts are scarves, hats or socks. These small, quick-knit items
are the perfect last minute gifts that really mean a lot. Today
we have posted a new Web Exclusive Free Pattern for a hat
and scarf. It's called Clara.
The scarf is knit in a 4
row stockinette stripe pattern in Furz
and Opulent FX. The matching
hat is crocheted with a strand of Opulent FX and a strand of Furz
held together. It is trimmed with a double strand of Zap. If you
want to knit the scarf in another color combination, I have put
together 4 alternate colorways for you to see.
Opulent FX 7809
Silver & Furz 3834 Black
Opulent FX 7811
Bronze & Furz 3852 Green Essence
Opulent FX 7813
Rose Glow & Furz 3870 Rust
Opulent FX 7808
Platinum & Furz 3801 Vanilla
As for the hat, I love the natural brown Zap
trim. However, you could experiment with other trims. On the black
and silver combo, Pitch Black Zap would look great. On the Vanilla
and Platinum combo, the Crema Zap would look very elegant. You could
also experiment with our variegated Zap Colors for trim and try
Autumn Leevz with the Green Essence and Bronze combo. I like the
Pitch Black Zap trim if you choose the Chestnut and Rose Glow combo.
Here's a look at all the shades available for each yarnFurz,
Opulent FX, Zap
and Zap Colors.
Monica from Ohio recently sent us an interesting question. She is
a sock knitter who wanted to know whether she could repair her hand
knitted socks that were worn out at the toe and heel. She has made
several pairs of socks and they are all in desperate need of repair.
I told her that she could darn them with matching yarn but it takes
a very skilled needleworker to mend a sock seamlessly so that there
is no irritation to your foot caused by the difference in thickness
of the darned area abutting the undarned area. A poor darning technique
may cause irritating blisters. If Monica had knit her socks with
Jawoll from Lang, she would have found a spool of reinforcement
yarn in the center of each skein. This reinforcing yarn is dyed
to match the sock yarn. You simple carry it along with the sock
yarn as you knit the heel and toe. These are the parts of the sock
that get the most wear and therefore the nylon-reinforced yarn will
prolong the life of the sock. Take a peek at the vast collection
of Jawoll
Sock Yarns.
BEGINNER'S Q & A
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Fiona in Tempe, Arizona asked:
"When you are knitting stockinette stitch and you finish a
row and put your work down, how do you know whether the next row
is knit or purl? Do you have to keep notes?"
Fiona, it's simple once you
really look at your knitting. No, you most certainly don't have
to keep notes. If you had to keep notes, I would never have become
a knitter! When the right side of your knitting is facing you, you
will be able to see V's lined up side-by-side and stacked row on
row. This is the knit side of the fabric. When the wrong side of
the fabric is facing you, the purl side, you will see something
that looks just like our Berroco logo.
You can see that the purl stitches are rounder than the knit stitches.
It may help you to remember that purls are like pearls.
