KnitBits #78

Dear fiber fans,

This week we finished the last of our Thanksgiving leftovers. I marvel at the number of meals I have made from the creative combinations of what was a memorable feast. My relatives brought an assortment of their best dishes and somehow after all the guests left, these leftovers combined to make my turkey become not one, but several magnificent meals. When I came into work on Monday, I found our design room strewn with miscellaneous balls of scarf yarn and some empty cones. Once again, I was inspired to create something wonderful from leftovers.
Winter Wonderland Centerpiece
Pictured here is a Winter Wonderland Centerpiece that I made for the holiday table. I simply wrapped cones with leftover lengths of yarn combinations and held them in place with double sided tape. These are so simple that even children will enjoy making them. Let me explain how easy it is to create this elegant winter wonderland. Perhaps you will try wrapping yarn cones, styrofoam cones and even ice cream cones with your fabulous Berroco scarf yarns. You can put a cone in the center of your Christmas cookie platter for a festive way to decorate your present. If you use cardboard cones or ice cream cones you will need double sided tape and you will want to cover the cone completely with yarn so that the cone doesn’t peek through. If you use styrofoam cones, then you will need only to fasten the yarn at the top and the bottom with a straight pin. You can wrap it more randomly and let the cone’s white, snow-like quality show through. If you click on each one of the individual cones you can see which yarns I used.  I hope you have as much fun making your centerpiece as I did.

Candi Babies by Candi JensonIf you are thinking of giving a book to a crocheting friend I recommend Candy Babies.  Candi Jensen fell in love with our Suede and Plush yarns while she was making this book and she came up with some wonderful projects to crochet for babies. I love the little trapper cap on the cover, and what an adorable baby!

Beginner's Q & A

Luisa from cyberspace wrote
, “I am knitting my very first sweater after having made scarves for everyone I know. I find that I am having trouble understanding the directions in book #230 for My First Multidirectional Pullover. When I read through them I can’t understand how it all makes sense.”

Luisa, this is a common problem that beginner knitters have with instructions. I really don’t think that you should feel that you must totally understand the directions before beginning. I do recommend that you go through the instructions and highlight or circle all the numbers that pertain to your size. Then simply proceed as it is written. Just do it and you will find that you will completely understand it once it is done. It is a simple leap of faith that you must take. The instructions will guide you. I hope you enjoy knitting this pullover. I know you will love wearing it.

In KnitBits #79 I will have some more last minute gift and decorating ideas.

Keep creative,
