Jan
from cyberspace wrote in to ask: “I have a question
regarding one sided ribbon - at least I think that the name is correct.
My frustration consists of knitting a stitch, pulling it through and
the backside is showing! This is apparently a constant result with
me. I infrequently see a top side! I have analyzed my stitch movement
and I cannot figure it out. I am wondering if you have ever helped
a knitter with this problem? My frustration comes when checking out
your site and seeing ribbon yarns that I would love to use, but I feel
incompetent.”
Jan, unlike other types of yarn, ribbon yarns are flat and therefore,
they have 2 sides. At this time, all of our ribbon yarns have two sides
that are the same. For example, Suede™, Zen™, Zen™ Colors, Metallic FX™
and Glace™ all have an equal and uniform color effect on both sides.
Occasionally, you will find a ribbon that is cut from fabric which
is dyed or printed on only one side. These ribbons will knit up in
an irregular pattern effect. Some ribbons are very wide and you will
find that they will fold lengthwise as you knit them, hiding one side
of the ribbon completely and thus losing some of the beautiful effect.
When we choose a ribbon yarn for our collection, we always consider
the knitting quality and the performance of the yarn before we buy
it. One-sided ribbons are risky unless an “on and off” effect
is desired. It is up to style and individual preference.
All
the best,
