Mother's Day Projects
Mother's Day is May 11 and some of our Berroco employees created yarn projects that will make perfectly charming gifts.
One of our design team members, Donna Yacino, is not only an expert crocheter but she has years of experience as a professional florist as well. I presented her with a design challenge to create a Mother's Day gift inspired by pussy willows and hydrangeas (2 of my botanical favorites). I knew that Donna was the right candidate for this project. She was able to combine her skills and materials from both crafts. Donna presented us with Centerpiece, a charming arrangement of faux pussy willows with a magnificent hydrangea. With Ultra®Alpaca and Ultra®Alpaca Light she crocheted leaves, flowers and buds and then attached them to florists wire and wrapped the stems with yarn - brilliant!
Meredith Wheeler is our Office Manager and the daughter of Brenda York, our
instruction writer. Born into a great heritage of knitting,
Merri shows no particular interest in mastering her own knitting skills, however
she is very creative and a great problem solver. I gave her the task of designing
a Mother's
Day gift with our yarn using no knitting or crocheting skills. I asked her
to think of a project that even a 6-year-old would be capable of making, something
that offered the maker immediate gratification. She chose to cover a tall drinking
glass with yarn by first swathing it with double sided tape and then wrapping
with Jasper™ to
cover the entire outside surface. We named it Birch.
It looked terrific and so simple! For the photo I took a bunch of real pussy
willows, shortened the stems a bit and voila, the surface of the glass resembled
the bark of a tree and it made a lovely centerpiece.
If you would like to consider making other gifts for
the special mother in your life, have a look at the many gift ideas at right.
All the best,
